Æthelwulf of Wessex
Æthelwulf was king of Wessex from 839 to 858, the son of Ecgberht. He and his son Æthelbald won a great victory over the Vikings at Aclea in 851, and in 855 he made a pilgrimage to Rome with his youngest son Alfred, marrying the Frankish princess Judith on his return. Four of his sons, including Alfred the Great, ruled Wessex after him.
