Calicut

Calicut, now Kozhikode, is a port city on the Malabar coast of southwestern India, a major centre of the medieval spice trade. Vasco da Gama reached Calicut in 1498, opening the sea route from Europe to India. Conflict with the ruler of Calicut shaped the early efforts of the Portuguese Empire to dominate Indian Ocean trade.
