Carlos Humberto Romero

1924–2017 · 20th century

Carlos Humberto Romero was a Salvadoran army general who became president in 1977 after an election widely denounced as fraudulent. His government met rising protest and guerrilla activity with harsh repression, including the killing of demonstrators and priests. He was overthrown by reformist officers on 15 October 1979, a coup that was followed by the civil war.
