Daniel O'Connell

1775–1847 · 19th century

Daniel O'Connell was an Irish political leader known as the Liberator. His Catholic Association organised mass, peaceful pressure that forced the British government to grant Catholic emancipation in 1829, and he then led a campaign for repeal of the Act of Union, which faltered after the government banned his monster meeting at Clontarf in 1843.
