Edgar, King of England

c. 943–975 · 10th century · Also known as Edgar the Peaceful

Edgar, known as the Peaceful, was king of the English from 959 to 975. His reign was free of major invasion, and he supported the Benedictine monastic reform led by Dunstan, Æthelwold and Oswald. In 973 he was crowned at Bath in a ceremony that shaped later English coronations, and around the same time he reformed the coinage into a uniform royal currency struck at many mints.
