El Mozote massacre
The El Mozote massacre was the killing of more than 800 civilians, many of them children, by the Atlacatl Battalion of the Salvadoran army in and around the village of El Mozote, in Morazán department, on 11–12 December 1981. It was the largest massacre of the Salvadoran civil war. Long denied by the Salvadoran and American governments, it was confirmed by exhumations and the UN Truth Commission.
