El Oro Province
El Oro is a coastal province in southern Ecuador on the border with Peru, with its capital at Machala. It is a major producer of bananas and shrimp and has gold mines in its uplands, which give it its name. During the war of 1941 Peruvian forces invaded and occupied the province until the Rio de Janeiro Protocol of 1942.
