Gonghe Regency

841–828 BCE · 9th century BCE

The Gonghe Regency was the period from 841 to 828 BCE when the Zhou state was governed without a king after a revolt in the capital drove King Li into exile. Traditional sources describe joint rule by the Dukes of Zhou and Shao, while others credit a noble named He, the Earl of Gong. The year 841 BCE is the first securely dated year in Chinese history, recorded in Sima Qian's Records of the Grand Historian.
