Guacanagarí
Guacanagarí was the cacique of Marién in north-western Hispaniola when Columbus arrived in 1492. He helped the Spanish salvage the wrecked Santa María, and Columbus built La Navidad, the first European settlement in the Americas, on his land. He stayed allied with the Spanish, but his people suffered under tribute and forced labour, and he died a fugitive in the mountains.
