Lapland (Finland)
Lapland is the northernmost region of Finland, covering nearly a third of the country's area but home to fewer than 200,000 people, with Rovaniemi as its capital. Long inhabited by the Sámi, it is a land of forest, fells and tundra largely north of the Arctic Circle. In the Lapland War of 1944–1945 retreating German troops burned Rovaniemi and much of the province.
