Laurens Storm van 's Gravesande

1704–1775 · 18th century

Laurens Storm van 's Gravesande was a Dutch colonial administrator, commander and later director-general of Essequibo from 1743 to 1772 for the Dutch West India Company. In 1745–1746 he opened the neighbouring Demerara river to settlement, granting land to planters, many of them British from Barbados and other islands. Demerara soon outgrew Essequibo. His reports are a key source for the colony's early history.
