Luigi Cadorna

1850–1928 · 20th century

Luigi Cadorna was chief of staff of the Italian army from 1914 to 1917. He launched eleven costly offensives on the Isonzo front and imposed harsh discipline, including summary executions. After the defeat at Caporetto in October–November 1917 he blamed his soldiers and was replaced by Armando Diaz; he was nevertheless made a marshal of Italy in 1924.
