Malhar Rao Gaekwad

1831–1882 · 19th century

Malhar Rao Gaekwad was Maharaja of Baroda from 1870 to 1875. In 1874 he was accused of trying to poison the British Resident, Colonel Robert Phayre, with arsenic. A commission of inquiry failed to agree on his guilt, but the British government deposed him in 1875 for misrule, sent him into exile at Madras and installed the young Sayajirao Gaekwad III.
