Matsumae Castle

1854 · 19th century

Matsumae Castle, also called Fukuyama Castle, stands in the town of Matsumae in southern Hokkaido, Japan. Completed in 1854 to strengthen coastal defence, it was the last Japanese castle built in the traditional style. Forces of the Republic of Ezo captured it in 1868. Most of its buildings were later lost, and its keep, burned in 1949, was rebuilt in concrete in 1961.
