Modernism
Modernism was an artistic and cultural movement of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries that broke with traditional forms. According to the Benin Empire's profile, the Benin bronzes looted in 1897 influenced European modernism through the admiration of artists such as Picasso and Matisse. African art more broadly was an important source for modernist artists.
