Nouméa
Nouméa is the capital and largest city of New Caledonia, a French territory in the south-west Pacific. Founded in 1854 as the military post of Port-de-France, it was renamed in 1866 and grew as the administrative centre, the port of the penal colony and a nickel-processing town. In the Second World War it was a major base for American forces in the Pacific.
