Riksdag of Västerås (1527)
The Riksdag of Västerås of June 1527 was the assembly at which Gustav Vasa, threatening to abdicate, forced the estates to transfer much of the wealth of the church to the crown and to allow the preaching of the Lutheran gospel. Its decisions, set out in the Recess of Västerås, broke the political power of the bishops and began the Swedish Reformation and the making of a Lutheran state church.
