Treaty of Alcañices

1297 · 13th century · Also known as Treaty of Alcanices

The Treaty of Alcañices was signed on 12 September 1297 at Alcañices in León between King Denis of Portugal and Ferdinand IV of Castile. Portugal gained the Riba-Côa district and other border towns, giving up claims elsewhere, and the two crowns agreed peace and royal marriages. The border it fixed has changed little since, making it one of the oldest in Europe.
