Treaty of Pavia (1329)

1329 · 14th century

The Treaty of Pavia of 4 August 1329 divided the lands of the house of Wittelsbach. Emperor Louis IV the Bavarian kept Upper Bavaria, while the Rhenish Palatinate and the Upper Palatinate went to his nephews Rudolf II and Rupert I, sons of his brother Rudolf I. The treaty founded the separate Palatine line of the Wittelsbachs and provided that the electoral vote should alternate, a question the Golden Bull of 1356 settled in favour of the Palatinate.
