United Democratic Front (South Africa)

1983–1991 · 20th century

The United Democratic Front (UDF) was a South African coalition of hundreds of civic, church, student, labour and community organisations launched in August 1983 to oppose the tricameral constitution. Non-racial and aligned with the banned ANC, it led rent boycotts, strikes and protests in the townships during the uprisings of the mid-1980s. It was restricted in 1988 and dissolved in 1991 after the ANC was unbanned.
