Yuri's Day

Also known as St George's Day (Russia)

Yuri's Day, the autumn feast of St George on 26 November, was the time when Russian peasants were allowed to leave their landlords. The Sudebnik of 1497 limited peasant departure to the week before and the week after the feast, once the harvest was in and dues were settled. From the 1580s 'forbidden years' suspended the right, and the law code of 1649 abolished it altogether, binding peasants to the land as serfs.
