Sultanate of Agadez

1449 CE – 1900 CE (approx.) · capital Agadez

Sultanate of the Air mountains in the Sahara, whose sultan arbitrated among Tuareg confederations and guarded caravan routes between Hausaland and North Africa.

Origins

The Tuareg confederations of the Air massif agreed in the early 15th century to accept a sultan who stood outside their rivalries; tradition says the first came from the north or even from Istanbul. The seat moved from Tin Shaman to the oasis town of Agadez around 1449, and the town grew as a caravan halt.

Rule and society

The sultan was chosen from a single family but installed by the Tuareg leaders, whose consent limited his power. He collected tolls on caravans, judged disputes and led the salt caravans to Bilma. Agadez had a mixed Tuareg and Hausa-speaking population, Muslim scholars, and a tall mud-brick minaret. The Songhai Empire under Askia Muhammad made the sultanate a tributary around 1500.

Decline and legacy

The French Foureau-Lamy mission passed through Agadez in 1899, and French forces occupied the town in the early 1900s. In 1916 and 1917 Sultan Tegama joined the Tuareg revolt of Kaocen, which besieged the French garrison; he was captured and killed. The sultanate survives in a ceremonial form, and Agadez's old town is a World Heritage Site.
