Abraham Duquesne

c. 1610–1688 · 17th century

Abraham Duquesne was a French naval commander, a Protestant from Dieppe, who became one of Louis XIV's leading admirals. In 1676 he defeated a Dutch-Spanish fleet under Michiel de Ruyter at the Battle of Augusta off Sicily. In 1682 and 1683 he bombarded Algiers with newly developed bomb vessels, destroying much of the lower town and forcing the release of French captives.
