Adelaide of Italy

931–999 · 10th century · Also known as Saint Adelaide

Adelaide of Italy was the daughter of King Rudolf II of Burgundy and became queen of Italy by her first marriage to Lothair II. After his death she was imprisoned by Berengar II, and her rescue led to her marriage in 951 to Otto I, with whom she was crowned empress in 962. She acted as regent for her grandson Otto III and was later venerated as a saint.
