Lothair II

c. 835–869 · 9th century · Also known as Lothair II of Lotharingia

Lothair II was the second son of Emperor Lothair I and received the northern part of Middle Francia at the Treaty of Prüm in 855, a kingdom later named Lotharingia after him. His long attempt to divorce his wife Theutberga embroiled him with the papacy. He died without legitimate heirs in 869, and his uncles divided his kingdom; the name survives in Lorraine.
