Papacy

Also known as papal, Pope

The papacy is the office of the Pope, the bishop of Rome and head of the Catholic Church. In the eighth and ninth centuries it allied with the Carolingians, culminating in Charlemagne's coronation in 800, and later crowned the Holy Roman emperors. Popes also proclaimed crusades against Muslim powers, including the Almohad Caliphate, and sought alliances with the Mongol Ilkhanate.
