Principality of Arianiti

1432 CE – 1462 CE (approx.)

Lands of the Albanian lord Gjergj Arianiti, who led an early revolt against the Ottomans and became Skanderbeg's ally and father-in-law.

Origins

The Arianiti were an old noble family of central Albania, holding lands along the Shkumbin valley and around Elbasan. In 1432 Gjergj Arianiti, who had been a hostage at the Ottoman court, led a rising against the new Ottoman land registers and defeated several Ottoman armies in the mountains between 1432 and 1436.

Rule and society

Little is known of how the lands were governed: they were a mountain lordship of fortified villages and clan levies rather than a state with fixed institutions, and no clear capital is recorded. Gjergj built ties through marriage, wedding his daughter Donika to Skanderbeg in 1451, and negotiated with Venice, Naples and the papacy.

Decline and legacy

Gjergj Arianiti joined the League of Lezhë in 1444, though he later quarrelled with Skanderbeg. He died in 1462, and the family's lands fell to the Ottomans in the following years. His descendants, the Arianiti Comneni, settled in Italy.
