Naples
Naples is the largest city of southern Italy, on the Bay of Naples in Campania. Founded by Greek settlers from Cumae as Neapolis, it kept its Greek character under Rome, and in the early Middle Ages it was a self-governing Byzantine duchy. From the 13th century it was the capital of the Kingdom of Naples under Angevin, Aragonese, Spanish and Bourbon kings, and one of Europe's largest cities, until it joined united Italy in 1861.
