Kingdom of Croatia (925-1102)
Origins
Around 925 Tomislav, ruler of the Duchy of Croatia, also held the Duchy of Pannonian Croatia and was addressed as king in papal letters. He had defeated Hungarian raids and the army of Simeon I of Bulgaria, uniting the Croats in one kingdom.
Rule and society
Kings ruled with a council of nobles and bans, from royal seats such as Knin, Biograd na Moru and Nin. Petar Krešimir IV (1058–1074) brought the Byzantine Dalmatian towns under his control, and Demetrius Zvonimir was crowned by a papal legate in 1076, tying Croatia to the Reformed papacy. The Baška tablet records Zvonimir's gift in Glagolitic script.
Decline and legacy
After Zvonimir died without heirs, Ladislaus I of Hungary claimed the throne. The last king, Petar Snačić, fell at Gvozd in 1097, and in 1102 Coloman was crowned king of Croatia, beginning the Kingdom of Croatia (1102-1526) in union with Hungary.
