Ladislaus I of Hungary

c. 1040–1095 · 11th century · Also known as Saint Ladislaus

Ladislaus I was king of Hungary from 1077 to 1095. He strengthened royal power and the Church, issued strict laws against theft and defeated Cuman and Pecheneg raiders. After the death of the last Trpimirović king he claimed Croatia through his sister Helen, Zvonimir's widow, and occupied much of it around 1091, preparing its union with Hungary. He was canonised in 1192.
