duchy · Balkans and Hungary
Duchy of Pannonian Croatia
Origins
After Charlemagne destroyed the Avar Khaganate in the 790s, the Slavs of the Sava valley came under Frankish overlordship as part of the march of Friuli. A duchy appears in Frankish sources by 818, with its seat at Sisak, the Roman Siscia.
Rule and society
Its dukes governed a Slavic population as Frankish vassals. Between 819 and 823 Duke Ljudevit Posavski rebelled against harsh Frankish rule, drawing in the Timočani and others, and fought the Duchy of Croatia, before fleeing and being killed. Later, Duke Braslav held lands between the Drava and Sava and aided the East Frankish king Arnulf against Great Moravia in the 880s and 890s.
Decline and legacy
Hungarian raids from the 890s weakened Frankish control. Around 925 the region was united with Dalmatian Croatia under Tomislav, forming the Kingdom of Croatia (925-1102); the area later became Slavonia.
