Sava
The Sava is a river of south-eastern Europe, about 950 kilometres long, which rises in the Julian Alps of Slovenia and flows east through Croatia and along the Bosnian border to join the Danube at Belgrade. Its valley was a major route between Italy and the Balkans, guarded in Roman times by Siscia and Sirmium. For centuries it marked frontiers between Hungary and the Balkan states and later between the Habsburg and Ottoman empires.
