Kingdom of Illyria

1816 CE – 1849 CE · capital Laibach

Austrian crown land formed from the former French Illyrian Provinces, uniting Slovene and Adriatic lands under one title for three decades.

Origins

When Austria recovered Napoleon's Illyrian Provinces, it kept the name and in 1816 created the Kingdom of Illyria as a crown land of the Austrian Empire. It comprised Carniola, Carinthia, Gorizia and Gradisca, Istria and Trieste, and for a few years Civil Croatia south of the Sava, which returned to Hungary in 1822.

Rule and society

The kingdom was mainly an administrative label: it was divided into two governorates, at Laibach and Trieste, each run by Austrian officials under the system of Metternich, with provincial estates of little power. Laibach hosted the congress of 1821 on revolutions in Italy. Slovene cultural life grew, with the poet France Prešeren writing in Laibach in the 1830s and 1840s.

Decline and legacy

After the revolutions of 1848, the 1849 constitution dissolved the kingdom into separate crown lands: Carniola, Carinthia and the Austrian Littoral. The emperor kept the title King of Illyria until 1918.
