Klemens von Metternich

1773–1859 · 19th century · Also known as Prince Metternich

Prince Klemens von Metternich was Austrian foreign minister from 1809 and chancellor from 1821 until 1848. A leading figure at the Congress of Vienna in 1814–1815, he shaped a conservative European order based on the balance of power and cooperation among monarchies. In Austria and the German Confederation he suppressed liberal and national movements through censorship and police, until the revolutions of 1848 forced him to flee.
