Carlsbad Decrees

1819 · 19th century

The Carlsbad Decrees were measures agreed by German states at Carlsbad in August 1819 at the urging of Metternich and adopted by the Federal Diet of the German Confederation in September. Prompted by the murder of the writer August von Kotzebue by a student, they banned the nationalist student fraternities, imposed press censorship and placed universities under supervision. They became a symbol of the repression of the Restoration era.
