Denmark
Denmark is a Scandinavian kingdom that, as Denmark-Norway, was Sweden's principal rival for control of the Baltic in the early modern period. Swedish victories over Denmark, culminating in the Treaty of Roskilde (1658), were central to the foundation of the Swedish Empire, while Danish attacks after the Swedish defeat at Poltava in 1709 contributed to its decline.
