Swedish Empire
The Swedish Empire refers to the period, known in Swedish as Stormaktstiden or the Age of Great Power, when Sweden dominated the Baltic region in the seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries. Built on military reform, Baltic conquests and gains from the Thirty Years' War, it controlled territories around the Baltic Sea and in northern Germany. Its power ended with defeat in the Great Northern War and the Treaty of Nystad in 1721.
