Swedish Estonia

1561–1721 · 16th century · Also known as Swedish Duchy of Estonia

Swedish Estonia was the Duchy of Estonia under the Swedish crown from 1561, when Reval and the northern Estonian nobility submitted to Eric XIV during the collapse of the Livonian Confederation, until 1721. The Baltic German nobles kept their privileges and their Lutheran church under Swedish rule. Russia conquered it in the Great Northern War, and the Treaty of Nystad made it the Governorate of Estonia.
