Eric XIV of Sweden

1533–1577 · 16th century

Eric XIV of Sweden, eldest son of Gustav Vasa, was king from 1560 to 1568. In 1561 Reval and the knighthoods of northern Estonia submitted to him, beginning Swedish rule there and drawing Sweden into the Livonian War. In 1563 he crushed the independent Duchy of Finland of his half-brother John. Mental illness and political murders weakened him, and John deposed him in 1568; he died a prisoner.
