Erich Ludendorff

1865–1937 · 20th century

Erich Ludendorff was a German general who served as chief of staff to Paul von Hindenburg on the Eastern Front from 1914, sharing in the victory at Tannenberg. Their command, Ober Ost, ran the occupied Baltic and Belarusian lands as a military state. From 1916 the two directed Germany's whole war effort. After 1918 Ludendorff joined Hitler's Munich putsch of 1923 and spread the myth that the army had been stabbed in the back.
