Belarusians
Belarusians are an East Slavic people who form the majority of the population of Belarus and live in neighbouring parts of Poland, Lithuania, Russia and Ukraine. Their lands formed the core of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, where Ruthenian, an ancestor of their language, was used in government. Between the world wars they were divided between Poland and the Soviet Union, and an independent Belarus emerged in 1991.
