Council of Lithuania

1917–1920 · 20th century · Also known as Taryba

The Council of Lithuania, or Taryba, was the body elected by the Vilnius Conference in September 1917, under German occupation, to represent Lithuania. Chaired by Antanas Smetona, it signed the Act of Independence on 16 February 1918, and in July 1918 briefly proclaimed a monarchy under Mindaugas II. After Germany's defeat it formed the first governments and gave way to the Constituent Assembly in 1920.
