Council of Italy

1555 · 16th century · Also known as Supreme Council of Italy

The Council of Italy was a council of the Spanish monarchy, created under Philip II in the 1550s to advise the king on the government of his Italian possessions: the Duchy of Milan and the kingdoms of Naples and Sicily. Sitting in Madrid, it dealt with appointments, finance, justice and petitions from these states. It lost its purpose when Spain gave up its Italian lands in the War of the Spanish Succession.
