Senate of Milan

1499–1786 · 15th century

The Senate of Milan was the supreme court and highest council of the Duchy of Milan, created by Louis XII of France in 1499 after his conquest of the duchy. It survived under the last Sforza dukes and under Spanish rule, registering and interpreting laws and guarding local legal traditions. Joseph II abolished it in 1786 as part of his reforms of Austrian Lombardy.
