Senate of Forty-Eight

1532 · 16th century · Also known as Senato dei Quarantotto

The Senate of Forty-Eight was a council created in Florence in 1532, when the republic was abolished and Alessandro de' Medici became hereditary duke. Its members, chosen for life from leading families, formally kept the right to elect the duke and to approve major decisions, and in 1537 it chose Cosimo I. Under the grand dukes it survived as a largely ceremonial body, while real authority lay with the ruler and his secretaries.
