Lorraine
Lorraine is a region of north-eastern France on the border with Germany, whose name derives from Lotharingia, the share of Lothair II after the division of the Carolingian Empire. It was long contested between French and German rulers. The German Empire annexed part of Lorraine together with Alsace in 1871, and France regained it after the First World War.
