Germany is a country in central Europe. Its lands formed the core of the Holy Roman Empire and were unified in 1871 as the German Empire. Germany was the ally of Austria-Hungary and later of Italy and Japan in the world wars, and it figures in the histories of the Carolingian, Spanish and Swedish Empires.
