Germanus of Auxerre

c. 378–c. 448 · 5th century · Also known as Saint Germanus of Auxerre

Germanus of Auxerre was a Gallo-Roman bishop of Auxerre who visited Britain in 429, and perhaps again later, to oppose the Pelagian heresy. His Life records that he led the Britons to a bloodless 'Alleluia victory' over Picts and Saxons. He became a prominent figure in Welsh tradition, and the Pillar of Eliseg names a Germanus who blessed Britu, son of Vortigern.
