Picts
The Picts were the people of northern and eastern Scotland in late antiquity and the early Middle Ages, first named by a Roman writer in 297. Descended from the Iron Age Caledonians and other tribes, they spoke a Brittonic language and left carved symbol stones. Their kingdoms, chiefly Fortriu, merged with the Gaelic kingdom of Dál Riata in the 9th century to form Alba, the later Kingdom of Scotland.
