Cenel nGabrain
Origins
Cenel nGabrain traced its descent to Gabran, said to be a grandson of Fergus Mor, and held Kintyre, Arran and nearby lands in the 6th century. Its leading king, Aedan mac Gabrain, was ordained by Columba of Iona according to Adomnan, and campaigned widely in northern Britain before his defeat by Aethelfrith of Bernicia at Degsastan in 603.
Rule and society
The kindred controlled the hillfort of Dunadd for much of its history and competed with Cenel Loairn for the overkingship. Its rulers patronised Iona and fought both Picts and Britons of Alt Clut. The Senchus fer nAlban records its houses and duties to supply ships.
Decline and legacy
Defeat at Mag Rath in 637 under Domnall Brecc, and later Pictish conquest, eroded its standing. Kenneth MacAlpin, founder of the Kingdom of Scotland in the 840s, was traditionally counted among its descendants, giving the kindred a central place in Scottish royal genealogy.
